Interactions with others are an unavoidable part of today’s society. Communication with others occur daily, and without fail. Though these intercommunications cannot be helped, it is up to people to maintain a relationship. It is a choice for one to stay in a committed relationship with another. These relationships don’t necessarily mean an intimate affair with a significant other, rather they can be with family, friends and acquaintances as well. Augustus Waters had a great relationship with Hazel, and it was evident throughout the whole book. People can have different experiences regarding love, and even then, these experiences can vary in magnitude. One thing that these experiences do have in common is the desire to keep everything the way it is, as it is a benefit to one’s life. It is a pushing force to keep one going even through all of the hardships they face. Augustus is a first hand learner of this in the book. Augustus had learned that he had a recurrence of his osteosarcoma, and that it was in multiple places. He knew he was going to die, yet he kept fighting. He wanted to spend his life the way he thought it should be spent, and that was through his dream, and with the person he fell in love with, “‘I’m in love with you,’ he said quietly … ‘I’m in love with you, and i know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we’re all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labour has been returned to dust, and i know the sun will swallow the only earth we’ll ever have, and i am in love with you.’” (Green, p. 153) This quote is significant, as it is the first time Augustus had openly expressed his feelings towards Hazel. It has not yet been told in the book that Augustus had regained his cancerous tumours, and he was still trying to show Hazel how much she means to him. Some would succumb to the pressure of not being able to live anymore and would want to give up on their life. An example of this would be Hazel Grace Lancaster, who was forced out of her home by her mother. By exploring outside of her home, Hazel met quite a number of people, who were very similar to her. These people include Augustus, Isaac and even Peter Van Houten. These characters did not have much to live for but ended up finding value in their lives. They found these reasons to live multiple times through dreams, others, and love. When asked again, a great number of people would still say their lives are decent, but once they find reasons to live, their thoughts towards their lives would become more favourable. Everyone has a reason to live, but it is up to them to search for them. Life is worth living, only when one knows what to live
