Max Vicario English IV Honors Mrs. Schroder February 16 2018 As the novel of Pride and Prejudice progresses, character Elizabeth Bennett forms relationships with both family members and new potential suitors. Elizabeth’s initial judgements set the tone at the beginning of each interaction, but over time, she learns more about these new characters. As her relationships strengthen, Elizabeth uncovers her true feelings and changes in a positive manner by learning more about herself, Mr. Darcy, Mr. Wickham, and her parents. Both of Elizabeth’s parents exemplify two opposite forces on a personal level. Mr. Wickham and Elizabeth strike up a conversation and immediately have positive, mutual feelings for each other. Wickham even talks to her about his past relationship with Darcy as a childhood friend. He tells her Darcy cheated him out of inheritance, and they no longer speak. Elizabeth naturally felt sympathetic for the young soldier, and her first impression of him remained unwavered. The reader later realizes that Wickham gambles and has many unpaid debts. Also, he tried to elope with 15 year old Georgiana Darcy a few years before Elizabeth’s first interaction with him. Jane Austen puts Wickham in the story to oppose Elizabeth’s impression of Darcy. The two first impressions differed greatly, yet as the story continues, the character traits of both Darcy and Wickham reveal to Elizabeth and the reader that primary interactions do not account for all character traits of a person. Wickham and Elizabeth have a negative relationship turn when she finds out the truth of Wickham’s character. As she shuns away Wickham, her relationship with the prideful Darcy only continues to improve over
