Everyone in the world needs somebody who loves them and someone cares for them. Teenagers tend to not notice relationships they can build with family members, Classmates and others. The novel Speak shows how those relationships can impact teenagers decisions and thoughts. Melinda Sordino experience helps readers understand people's perspectives negative or positive on how develop feelings through relationships. In this novel there are multiple individuals such as David, Mr.Freeman and Mrs. Sordino who all play apart in Melinda's thought and decisions. As evident throughout the novel ,Speak, David is a character that influences Melinda. When Melinda first meets David in biology she refers to him as “Cyber genius” ( 37) and “A kid that makes teachers nervous.” (37) Melinda clearly admires David. Melinda experiences a very eye opening event with David. During biology class, when they dissected apples, Melinda ate a chunk of an apple because of a memory at the orchard “ Sun warmed hair and all the apple picking parents and children smiled.”(66) Then she finds an apple tree growing from a apple seed inside an apple. Freeman is an huge affect on Melinda. When Melinda first meets Mr.Freeman, she refers to him as a “ Big old grasshopper body, like a stilt walking circus man.” (10) She thinks Mr.Freeman is a little off “ This guy is weird, he has to know it”. (11) Throughout the story Mr.Freeman grows on Melinda. Mr. Freeman always has something to compliment Melinda on “ You are on fire Melinda, I can see it in your eyes.” (61) On the last day of school, Melinda hands Mr.Freeman her tree.
