What was Sumer?
Sumer was established in 3,500 BCE it was located in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) between the Tigris and the Euphrates River, this is now known as the cradle of civilisation. Sumer was the oldest civilization in the world; it was a highly respected and diverse civilisation. During 18th century BCE, south Mesopotamia was called Babylonia this name had come from the bible as many stories were based in Mesopotamia. Sumerian architecture was the original architecture that many architectures of today derived from. The language is unknown but Akkadian and Sumerian both spoke a widespread bilingualism. They also had a writing system actually the first civallisation to have one about 5000 years ago the Sumerians created it.

In Mesopotamia they had one religion it was not named. The Sumerians would worship many gods and goddesses, but one of the most powerful goddesses, Ishtar father was Anu he was the god of all gods, Ishtar also has a brother Enki.These three gods and goddess are still worshipped Ishtar was the goddess of love, war, fertility and sexuality. Ishtar’s god symbol was a nine-pointed star; this star represents great significance and power. The Sumerians religion gradually with time faded, this was the time between the first and four centuries.
