In X-men,the beliefs of the citizens about the mutants are heavily relied on the opinion and choices of the government rather than the say of any religion. This is because this society is living in an era where there is already a form of democracy that controls the people in a civilised manner with rules. They may also believe this is not a sign of punishment from God but something that few individuals are simply just born with. For example, we learn that the government brings up the topic of mutations, God doesn’t have any presence in the conversations because there are people from a plethora of religions. The religions do not correlate with the decisions of the government.

The government has less of an impact in The Chrysalids compared to religion. This majority of this society is based off of beliefs from Nicholson's Repentances and The Bible. Those are the root sources from where the Waknuk community forms their rules and regulations. They saw the physical abnormality of humans and immediately assumed they were not of the “true image”. We see an example of their fear for mutants when David Strorm’s baby sister, Petra was born. We get Emily Strorm’s side, “At last Petra’s existence could be admitted.” This line shows that until before a baby is checked clean without deviations, they cannot be acknowledged. Then we get the other side of the story from Aunt Harriet, “They’ll take my baby away again like they took the others.” It represents that she didn’t get her baby checked because of a deviation that would have caused the inspector to take it away from her.
