In discussions of background themes in movies, a controversial issue that often arises is whether religion is prominent in a film. Some argue that people will see what they want to, while others dispute that the theme of religion is omnipresent in certain films. In The Dark Night, there are many intertextual echoes that portray the joker as a satanic character. Throughout the movie, he tempts people, kills for pleasure, destroys for no reason, and presents evil to bring out the worst in people. In The Dark Night, The Joker attempts to corrupt innocent people. One scene in the movie that highlights this is the part with the two boats with civilians on them. The Joker gives the commanders of each ship a device that will blow the other up. The two boats must then decide to save their own lives or sacrifice themselves.
