Through this period many writers, poets, and songwriters fled to America to escape persecution, especially from Great Britain. American Literature can describe Colonial Period America through two important themes, religion through the Puritans and The First Great Awakening, and equality or gaining rights through many declarations, petition, letter, and speeches during this period.
