The Power of Memory “Remembrance” by Tawnysha lynch is a poem about the speakers cruel memories of her time as a prisoner in the Auschwitz concentration camp, the largest nazi concentration camp during World War two, responsible for the violent deaths of millions of jews. The speaker is drawn back to her vivid memories as she stands in the midst of Auschwitz, and the imprint of her recollections revolves back to her, and at that moment, her memories became reality. The power of memory can be seen negatively affecting the speaker by bringing her back to the harrowing memories she experienced, and marking the past with haunting reminders, with the usage of imagery and flashbacks. Through the words of the speaker, and her methods of using literary devices, it is easy to understand the emotions she felt as the power of memory forced her to relive the horrifying memories she had while imprisoned in Auschwitz. One of the most notable literary elements that can be seen throughout this poem is imagery, with the utilization of imagery, the reader adapts a similar feeling to that of the speaker, as she stands at the heart of Auschwitz. The entirety of the poem is the speaker recalling her memories of being imprisoned, and without these flashbacks, we would not be able to understand how much of a mark the concentration camp has had on her. The usage of flashbacks is cleverly used throughout the poem and it can be seen in the poem when the speaker says, “A slight breeze passes, but I feel the beating of a whip” (Lynch). With the usage of many lines similar to this, the speaker uses these flashbacks to provide us with an understanding of the stains Auschwitz has left on
