The Reno Gang started their notorious reign of crime on May 22, 1868. They got their name in the world by being the first ones to rob a moving train. If you have ever learned about the Marshfield Train Robbery you know about the Reno Brothers/ Reno Gang. An earlier attempt on robbing a train was attempted by Guerrilla soldiers but the train was stopped. This gang was lead by seven gang members. The gang members in the the Reno gang was William, Simeon, Frank, John Reno, and Charlie Anderson two others not known. When robbing this train the Reno Brothers ran away with 96,000$ in gold, cash, and bonds (0.7 million today). On December 6, 1868 the messenger shot by the Reno Gang, dies from his wounds. On July 11, 1881 John Reno took place in the battle of Rich Mount. Frank Reno owned land near the Marshfield area. Most of the gold that they got was lost and could not be found a legend has it that most of the gold is buried near or around the train tracks. After the train robbery the Pinkerton Detective Agency was assigned to the task of catching them. The train company that was involved during the trial of the Reno Gang was the Ohio & Mississippi Rail-Road Company. As the trial was moved to Brownstown the citizens of the area didn’t trust the judge or the sheriff. The thieves were held in jail at Brownstown. The trial was held in sessions also know as terms. During this time the main way of transportation was horseback or carriages, the main way of making a living was agriculture. The area between Brownstown and Marshfield is very marshy and thicket. The citizens of Brownstown made many petitions to move the trial to Brownstown to Seymour. They didn’t trust their judge and didn’t trust their sheriff
