In a 2002 survey it was found that “one third of registered nurses are now over fifty years of age, that proportion is expected to rise to 40% over the next decade” (Dworkin 23). With such a large amount of the workforce aging towards retirement and not enough new nurses to replace them the RNs left in the middle are being stretched even thinner than they previously were. This has led to larger patient loads per nurse and a lack of time available for nurses to spend with their patients and a perceived decrease in patient care. I have unknowingly evolved into the nursing student and future registered nurse I want to become through my lived experiences; the interactions between patients and their family members, the nurses that I have worked hand in hand with, and the education I have received from my teachers, have individually helped me build my own personal set of values and beliefs to provide high-quality, patient-centered care to diverse populations with dedication and passion. To help patients meet their goals to bathe, eat, dress and be turned-what many take for granted- is emotionally rewarding and I am honored to have helped all of the patients I have helped the past three years as a hospital volunteer, clinical assistant, and a student nurse advancing in my career with a goal in becoming a registered nurse.
Upon graduation from LaGuardia, I plan to begin my career in hospitals and work with children and families as a Registered Nurse. At the same time, I am planning to go at Hunter College to pursue a Bachelor degree in Nursing too. After successfully pursuing the BSN degree, my goal is to study for Physician Assistant and become one. The reason I am choosing this long way is that I want to gain experience as a Registered nurse in hospitals while continuing my higher education to achieve a degree in Physician Assistant. To prepare myself for the nursing career, I have been working on my weaknesses from the very first day of my college.
