From Mexico to America: The Story of Joaquín Guzmán
Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán is known worldwide as one of the most notorious gangsters and a drug lord kingpin. He is believed to be one of the most feared men to get involved with business wise. Not much is known about Joaquín Guzmán’s childhood and his birthday is even unknown. Joaquín gets the nickname “El Chapo” from his height, and is spanish for “The Shorty” as he stands at only 5’6”. Being the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, he faces no fears, but his lack of caution will cost him a lifetime in prison. As it is true that he has not been found guilty with some crimes, he was still the one that ordered his Cartel to perform them. In 2011, 35 men and women were tortured and killed, while the Sinaloa Cartel left a banner claiming responsibility for these kills. Then in 2012, “14 mutilated bodies were found in a vehicle left in the city center” while the Sinaloa cartel took responsibility for that also (Press) . The list just goes on forever, and Guzmán, being one of the cartel's leaders, is responsible for this. However, Guzmán pleaded not guilty in US court on January 20, 2017, for 17 counts. How long he will be in prison for is still unknown, others say he should spend a lifetime so he never gets the chance to do these horrific things to people again. No man needs to want this man to be released one day and allow him to be able to walk the same streets as people's family, friends, and children. They have killed men, women, children, and even animals, and it does not phase them whatsoever. Guzmán and his cartel have “carried out thousands of acts of violence, including murders, assaults, kidnappings [and] torture,” within the past 5 years. They get rid of people that are in their way no matter what circumstances, in order to cover their tracks, “there were plastic sheets on the walls and a drain in the floor” a witness tells the press after seeing the murder house first-hand (Carroll). Under Guzmán’s control, the Sinaloa Cartel “trafficked heroin, marijuana and methamphetamine,” extending from South America to the United States. Guzmán is responsible for sending 440,000 pounds of cocaine to the United States” being named one of the biggest drug traffickers of all time (Mexican). Guzmán was also named the 10th richest man in Mexico with a “net worth is at around $1 billion,” which was all because of his infamous drug empire (Aldrich) . All of that money can not get him out of the trouble and years he will be facing. His cartel is well known around the world as one of the most dangerous cartels to cross paths with. The Sinaloa Cartel has been in business for 28 years and are still continuing on with their work. Drug trafficking is definitely not the worst thing Joaquín has done, but definitely what has gotten him in the most trouble.
