Do you like school? In the novel A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is focused around a girl named Francie who is going through poverty and struggles at home, yet she doesn’t let that define her. She is determined to learn, she loves school. She gets a good education and is determined to make something of herself. In a Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Betty Smith believes the way to get out of poverty is education, attitude, and hard work. Education; Katie believes the only way to get out of poverty is education; "An answer came to Katie. It was so simple that a flash of astonishment that felt like pain shot through her head. Education! That was it! It was education that made the difference! Education would pull them out of the grime and the dirt'' (207). …show more content…

The child must have a secret world in which live things that never were. It is necessary that she believe"(84). I think Mary Rommely says this because she wants Francie to have hope and look at things differently and when she is disappointed she can still imagine these things in her imagination, so her problems will not be that bad. Hard work; "This could be a whole life, you work eight hours a day covering wires to earn money to buy food and to pay for a place to sleep so that you can keep living just to come to this. These people are caught, and why? Because they haven't got enough education"(364). "It's after hours" (428). "She studied back and forth on the El. She studied in her rest periods and ate her meals with a book propped up on the table before her"(432). Francie was going to do whatever she could to get a good education, even if it meant going to work and somehow managing college in between. “Everyone said it was a pity that a slight pretty woman like Katie had to go out scrubbing floors” (12). Katie had to work hard for what they had. “Pity twisted her heart as she saw her mother, so soon to bear a child, sprawled awkwardly on her hands and knees” (330).
