Popular culture is a culture based on what society deems to be sought-after, trendy or popular. This extends to everything, including; fashion, food, music, sport and entertainment. 1920’s American arts and literature The arts, literature and music of the 1920’s was a reflection of the era’s modernization and establishment of new culture. There were several factors that contributed to the growth in popularity of the arts and literature during that era. For instance there was a rise in economy which helped people get better jobs, hence more time and money to purchase and enjoy works of artistic people (“Economy”). Also people had cars to go out and spend their free time at recreational places like cinemas or clubs that play live jazz music.
What is pop culture? Pop culture is made up different products and lifestyles that are accepted by our current society. The Holocaust has innovated many artists to start a new work based on the event. For example, the Holocaust was used as a background for the main character of Hannibal Lecter in Hannibal Rising. The way an artist portrays an event can affect people’s personal perspective on this catastrophic incident.
In this sense, popular culture is shared by the less well-educated and by the worse-off and its elements do not have big cultural value. Third, popular culture is commercial culture. It creates mass-produced goods for mass consumption and its audience represents a mass of non-discriminating consumers. Fourth, popular culture can be folk culture, or authentic people’s culture. Sometimes it’s hard to fathom that abortion is legal in the United States of America, “land of the free” freedom to choose, freedom of speech, however it’s not as free as one might make it out to be. Every year millions of babies are aborted, thrown away like trash and yet is legal and has been since 1973. If one doesn’t know what abortion is, it is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy. A baby’s heart starts to beat at around 6 weeks, and you can most likely hear it at around 8 weeks. With that being said, abortion is legal till around 16-18 weeks; in some states it is legal till 20 weeks!
A certain percentage of people have always asked, “Why are Asians treated poorly in the media if they are the model minority?” For the longest time, Asian Americans have been unable to achieve a voice or leave a trace in American pop culture since the popular media and consumer market undermines and negatively systematizes the racial group. As a matter of fact, there are plentiful Hollywood films nowadays that lack racial diversity in its casting members. Consequently, if the movie or television show did consist a diverse set of performers that consist of minorities, there is an abundance of racial mockery within the portrayal of the characters. Pop culture, short for popular culture, is the entirety of ideas, perspectives, attitudes, images, and other phenomena that are within the mainstream of a given culture (Wilson, 2014). It refers to products that are generally recognized and enjoyed by the majority of the people ((Wilson, 2014). Pop culture is manifested around the world through movies, music, television shows, newspapers, satellite broadcasts, food and clothing, sports, news (as in people/places in news), politics, and technology (West, 2016). Internet and social media also play a huge role in pop culture. Pop culture is almost often, if not always, interesting and appealing to most people.
In his book “Politics and mass culture” John Street states: “Popular culture’s ability to produce and articulate feelings can become the basis of an identity, and that identity can be the source of political thought and action.” (Street, J. Politics and mass culture, Temple University Press, 1997). He mentions that in the sphere of international relationships pop culture always played, plays and will play a crucial role. America perfectly knows how to “buy” the loyalty of others with the help of mass or pop culture. The perfect example to compare this phenomena with would be the strategy of ancient Byzantium, where the foreign ambassadors, who arrived to the country, were first given an excursion in the Emperor’s palace.
Over the last few decades, the world has witnessed the evolution of many different aspects of popular cultures, such as movies, technology, music, and fashion. Although the medium of Pop Culture has a lot to do with whether or not it actually causes change or if it just reflects on what has taken place. The general trend is that Pop Culture is utilized to reflect changes in people’s attitudes and beliefs, and only in rare instances does it actually cause significant changes. Movies in the 1970s and 80s are prime examples of how popular culture reflects on what is going on in society at the time, however, technological advancements in the 1990s is an anomalous example of when popular culture has caused changes in society.
