Epic poetry, by definition, is long narrative poem recounting heroic deeds. One of the oldest epics is Beowulf, it was written in the Anglo-Saxon period and was translated into the epic poem that we read in present day. Epics consist of a hero, a quest, speeches, magical beings, and many different places. Epic poems use kennings, which are two word metaphors used to enhance the text. The narrator of Beowulf clearly demonstrates kennings and that is what makes Beowulf an epic poem. Beowulf was written by an unknown poet in the Anglo-Saxon time period. The Anglo-Saxon time period is known for its Pagan Christian roots. Anglo-Saxon poetry that was written between the 5th and 11th century reflect the characteristics of the culture and life of Anglo-Saxon’s. First, you must have a hero of unbelievable strength and valor. The hero is sent on a quest of some sort, he must complete this quest or die trying. He will travel across many lands to reach the end of the quest and along the way encounter magical beings. The hero will also make many long speeches about his quest. Beowulf is the hero in this particular poem, he takes on the quest of killing Grendel, Grendel’s mother and the dragon. Beowulf travels a long way to get to Hrothgar’s mead hall and once at Hrothgar’s gates explains why he is there and is welcomed with open arms.
