Title An epic is a long narrative poem with elevated language. The epic “Beowulf” by an unknown author is about a virtuous and skilled man who was honored by many, approaching evil and monsters throughout his long quests. Beowulf is known not only as a hero for his willingness to risk his life for others but also because of how skilled he was and how he used his skills to defeat evil. In the end, Beowulf is known as a hero because he risked his life and for being such a skilled warrior.
Epic heroes are widely known for being honorable, trustworthy, and virtuous people. Beowulf showed us many examples of these characteristics in the epic. Beowulf fought in many challenging battles to save the people, which made many respect and honor him. Beowulf's first fight was against the “powerful monster” (1) Grendel. This was one of the first times we saw Beowulf being virtuous. He knew that this was going to be tough but ignored that and focused on wanting to stop all of the evil and chaos going on. In his very last fight against the dragon, Beowulf says, “I've never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles”(623, 624). Beowulf acknowledges that he is getting older and does not have the same strength as he did when he was young. This time he fears that this battle might actually be one of his last, but he still continues to go on with this battle. He came to a conclusion and told the people that “I’d use no sword, no weapon, if this beast could be killed without it” (628-629).
