Epic heroes have many common characteristics. Beowulf has traits of the perfect hero. The poem explores heroism in two separate phases, youth and age. Beowulf possesses many heroic qualities. Beowulf in his youth was a great warrior. Beowulf was the Geats greatest warrior. As on ( pg. 51, line 90 ) it says “ In his far - off home Beowulf, Higlacs follower and the strongest of the Geats ”. Beowulf is essentially a record of heroic deeds. Beowulf perfectly embodies the manners and values. As on ( pg.51, line 97 ) it says “ None of the wise ones regretted his going, much as he was loved by the Geats. The Geats praised Beowulf because he was a great warrior, loyal, and obedient. Beowulf supports Higlacs son with loyalty and respect. As on ( pg.64,line 585 ) it says “When Higd’s one son was gone, Beowulf ruled in Geatland took the throne he’d refused”. Beowulf didn’t want to be king, but out of respect of Higlac’s son, he became king. Beowulf comports himself as both a warrior and a warrior. As on ( pg.64, line 588 ) it says “ Beowulf was old with years and wisdom, fifty winters a king, when a dragon awoke from it ’s darkness and brought terror to his people”.
