All of Beowulf's actions were driven by sexual urges. Every child is born with a libido, which is a strong sexual desire provoked by a certain situations. Beowulf was looked at as a physically attractive man, and some could easily say he was a sexual figure. Knowing this, Beowulf unconsciously took this to his advantage. Although the story and movie is fictional, Beowulf is an ideal example for all of Sigmund Freud’s theories and hypotheses. Sigmund Freud has a theory of the psychosexual development of the Oedipus complex. Truthfully, he believed women were envious of men because of the fact they were male. The id is based on instincts, the ego is based on reality, and the superego is based on mortality. Truthfully, Beowulf appeared to just have his id and superego. His instincts were unconscious whenever he killed the demons. He did not just sit there and think about what he was doing. The id also operated as a pleasure principal. The movie showed how Beowulf took pleasure in killing demons. He also lied about the stories to feed his id even more. Beowulf also that he was indestructible and he had a sense of entitlement wherever he went. His superego is an aggressive and violent principal to his mental functions. Beowulf is, without a doubt, aggressive. An epic hero killing and being violent is what the movie was all about. It also does not help that Beowulf is male because testosterone is one of the major hormones that are straight linked to aggression. Beowulf most likely had extreme amounts of testosterone to feed his superego. The epic hero having such a large superego is both dangerous and self destructing.
