“Blanche DuBois” Tennessee Williams was born Thomas Lanier Williams. Williams came into the world in Columbus, Mississippi on March 26, 1911. The playwright wrote; Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, A Street Car Named Desire, Night of the Iguana, just to name a few. Tennessee wrote about things he saw daily during his childhood. His parents had a turbulent relationship. He earned his B.A. from the University of Iowa. Williams wrote about real life issues that touched many lives like; adultery, incest, mental illness, to name a few. Williams died in 1983 in New York City hotel room. The character of Blanche was a free spirit, expensive taste and mentally unstable. Blanche DuBois is a true southern belle. She is passionate, sexy, and a free spirit. Her style of dress is seductive; silk dresses, with feathers, and “genuine fox fur pieces”. Accessorized with “ropes of pearls” and “bracelets of solid gold”. She would wear expensive sweet perfume. Blanche grew up on a plantation called Belle Reve, in Mississippi. Blanche taught high school English. She traveled from Laurel to New Orleans to visit her sister Stella. Living in a small town and growing up on a plantation, she was in her own little world of southern traditions down to arranged marriages. She was raised to be a housewife where the husband was the main breadwinner. When Blanche visited her Stella in New Orleans, she was in for a culture shock! The apartment that Stella lived in and her husband Stanley took Blanche by surprise.
