Christmas in Mexico
Christmas was not originally celebrated in Mexico. They did not celebrate Christmas because they worshiped their own gods. When the Spanish started exploring and conquering different lands they introduced Christianity to the natives of Mexico. With Christianity came their holidays which included Christmas. This is how Christmas came to Mexico.
Christmas in America is very different from Christmas in Mexico. Christmas in America traditionally is twelve days. In Mexico it is almost two months! It lasts from December third to February second. Within these two months are many smaller holidays that have to do with Christmas. On December third starts the Noventas to honor the virgin of Guadalupe. This consists of devotional prayers that are said everyday for nine days. On the last day, the people of Mexico celebrate the Feast of the virgin of Guadalupe. They go to

Las Posadas goes to December twenty fourth, which like there in America, is Christmas Eve. During this time People take statues of Mary and Joseph and reenact the part of the Christmas story when they are looking for a place to stay. Eventually they will be taken in and the people carrying the statues will get food and drink from their host. On Christmas Eve people go to midnight mass and then have a feast. Because of American influence the Mexican people have started to adopt Santa into their traditions.
The next day is Christmas Day. This day is spent with family. It is also a day to relax from all of the festivities from the previous day.
The next little holiday is on December twenty eighth. This is called Day of the Sainted Innocents. This day is to remember when King Herod ordered the death of all newborn Jews so that Jesus couldn’t live to spread God’s message. It is celebrated like April Fools Day is celebrated here in
