Common Sense: Revolutionary for the Revolution By: Zaynab Faruqi The fight for freedom was full of hardships and struggles. The resources needed were scarce, not only the supplies, but the people. The American Revolution began in 1775 and was between America, the colonists, and Britain, the colonizers. Not many colonists were ready for the revolution, many of them were planning on staying loyal to Britain. However, Thomas Paine, a renowned author, had just the solution. By creating a pamphlet called “Common Sense” he pointed out just how much a revolution was necessary, gathering, or more so, rallying, colonists to their side. While he was writing, he began to think of the importance for people to understand why they should fight against the British and should revolutionize. As a result, this prompted him to write "Common Sense," in 1776, so colonists could have a clear status on why the fight for independence was happening and why it was urgent to join. Furthermore, its creation ended up becoming a huge success. “‘Common Sense’ sold about 120,000 copies in the first three months alone, being read in taverns and meeting houses across the 13 original colonies” (Brandeis.edu). People throughout the colonies were starting to join in on the revolution, bringing them a sense of unity, as they together began to fight for the promise of their nation. The pamphlet discusses numerous topics. One main point was that America was being controlled by a nation miles away from itself, meaning their control, in hindsight, should not even occur. “Small islands, not capable of protecting themselves, are the proper objects for kingdoms to take under their care; but there is something absurd, in supposing a continent to be perpetually governed by an island” (Common
