Vraj Patel Professor Colabianchi English 9 8 March 2024 Douglass’s Journey from Slave to Author to Abolitionist In the problematic atmosphere of the 19th century, a resilient voice echoed in the shadows of oppression, challenging many people across the nation. That voice belonged to Fredrick Douglass. He was born into slavery in February 1818. He was enslaved for twenty years. Throughout his enslavement, he became a beacon of hope and resilience to millions of slaves across America (Chaisson 1). Douglass made many contributions to abolish slavery with his writing. In addition, Douglass has an enduring impact on today’s world. Douglass often expressed his opinions in his books. He stated, “Once you learn to read, you will be forever free” (Douglass Narrative of the Life... 61). This quote highlights Douglass's view on the significance of education. Douglass believed that education could fight the mental struggles of slavery. He has a liberating worldview and emphasizes the importance of knowledge. He also stated, "To make a contented slave, you must make a thoughtless one. It is necessary to darken his moral and mental vision, and, as far as possible, to annihilate his power of reason"(Douglass Narrative of the Life... 64). This quote underlines the strategies put into play by slave owners to maintain and maintain control. This quote analyzes the defeat of the moral and intellectual development of slaves.
