George Orwell was a novelist, essayist, and critic that had a rough start, but finally made it large with his books “1984” and “Animal Farm”. George came from a rough childhood and was truly a self made man.

Born June 25,1903 in Motihari, India as Eric Arthur Blair, George belonged to a British family that was stationed in India. George's father was a British civil servant that was stationed in India and was considered and very dull and conservative man. However, after one year of his birth, George was taken to Henley-on-Thames, England with his mother and sister. There he grew up with his father rarely home. There he got his first taste of England’s class system. He noticed that the richer children were treated significantly better than himself. He was attending St.Cyprian’s on a partial scholarship. He may have been an outcast from his peers, but he made his first publication at the age of 11 in his local newspaper and won scholarships to Eton college. After his scholarship ran dry at Eton, he joined India’s Imperial Police Force. He resigned after five years of service with the intent of making a career out of writing. His first major publication was “Down and out in Paris and London”. The book was a story of his experiences of living in a poor family. At this time he published the book under the name of “George Orwell” to save his family of any embarrassment that the book may cause. HIs next published work was called, “Burmese Days”. Shortly after the book was published, he married his first wife, Eileen O'Shaughnessy.

In December of 1936, he and his wife went to Spain to fight in the Spanish Civil War. In the war,George was shot in the neck and arm during combat. They were both convicted of treason, but fled the country before they could be caught. Upon arrival back in England, Orwell fell ill with Tuberculosis.
