Greek Engineering Greek technology has dramatically evolved throughout history. Ancient Greek technology, which developed during the 5th century continued until the Roman Period included many inventions inspired by the need to improve weapons and tactics in war. Archimedes was born in 287 B.C. in Syracuse, Sicily, Magna Graecia. He studied mathematics at he Museum in Alexandria and made multiple contributions to the field of mathematics. His books centered around applied mathematics and mechanics and rigorous mathematical proofs. He founded the principles of plane and solid geometry. His multiple accomplishments, centering around mathematical principles, included his calculation of the first reliable value of pi to calculate the areas and volumes of curved surfaces and circular forms. He came up with a system of exponential notation that proved that nothing exists that is too large to be measured. He taught at Alexandria during 323-283 BC and wrote The Elements. This compilation of Geometry and number theory is one of the most influential works in mathematics. The Elements serves as the main textbook for teaching mathematics and geometry until the early 20th century (source 3). “It was Euclid, who more than two thousand years ago, started this tradition (of mathematical statements involving proofs) when he bequeathed to the world his book entitled The Elements” (source 4). He was the first individual to understand that mathematical truths were centered around specific definitions and all answered had to be proved.
