Karl Lagerfeld is known as the most influential and innovative designers of our time. As the current head of director of both the house of Chanel and the house of Fendi, he continues to provide a young and modern interpretation of these classic brands. His designs and creative core have allowed him to not only have three brands under his creative control but become an iconic figure in the fashion industry.
Karl Otto Lagerfeld was born in Hamburg, Germany on September 10, 1933. His father was Otto Lagerfeld and his mother was Elisabeth Bahlmann. He then moved to Jean Patou where he designed two haute couture collection per year. During his time at Jean Patou, his collections were poorly received by the fashion industry due to their low backs, low necklines, and short skirts.
In 1964, he began to freelance for Chloé. Lagerfeld was originally creating only a few pieces every season. He soon became more involved in the creative process and designed more pieces. His involvement with the 1972 Chloé spring collection had generated positive headlines. In this collection, Karl Lagerfeld introduced a skirt known as the “surprise skirts”. The “surprise skirt” was an incredibly loose, ankle-length, and pleated silk skirt that hid the fact it that it was actually pants.
After his time at Chloé, Lagerfeld career began to pick up speed. He began to work for the fashions house Fendi where he designed furs, accessories, and clothing lines. He soon began working with the fashion house of Chanel in 1983. Then in 1984, he created his own line known as “KARL LAGERFELD”. He now resides as creative director for both fashion houses and his own personal line. Lagerfeld collaborated with a number of brands and retailers.
