The Renaissance

Renaissance with the meaning of rebirth, can be traced at the beginning of the 14th century, originating in Italy. The term rebirth came from the idea of reawakening to the ideals of achievement of classical Roman culture and revival of interest in the artistic achievements of the Classical world. The two main themes of this art period was individual expression and worldly experience. The Renaissance movement was owed to economic growth, cosmopolitanism, and the political stability.

The main artist involved in the Renaissance movement were Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael. Leonardo Da Vinci was well known as the “Renaissance man”. He was the archetypal Renaissance man representing the humanistic values of the period in his art, science and writing. Leonardo was born in Anchiano, Tuscany and lived near Florence. Besides basic reading, writing and math, Leonardo didn’t receive formal education. His father appreciated his artistic talent and around the age of 15 he refined his painting and sculpting techniques and trained in mechanical arts.
