Introduction: Leonardo da Vinci was a 15th century Renaissance polymath, known for showing great talents in architecture, painting, anatomy and various other fields. He’s mostly known for such works as Mona Lisa, Vitruvian Man or The Last Supper. In my essay, I will explore his works and discoveries, and investigate their influence on art and [CONCLUSION]. I. Leonardo da Vinci was born in 1452 in Italy, during the Renaissance. It’s a period in European history, which is usually considered as a period when “art bloomed once more”. When Leonardo was born, Medici family was in power, which was known for supporting art. The main artist that influenced Leonardo was Andrea del Verrocchio, considered one of the finest artists of Florence. Leonardo da Vinci joined his workshop as an apprentice when he was fourteen years old, which greatly affected his future life. Later on, after becoming a successful artist his main sources of inspiration were random objects, such as stains on the walls. Even though the stains don’t represent anything, he was looking for particular shapes, lines that could resemble something completely new. III. One of his most popular and iconic artworks – Vitruvian Man, is a piece that concludes research and discoveries of an architect and engineer Vitruvius. It’s shows a man contained within a square and a circle, displaying perfect proportions of his body. Vitruvius applied mathematics and golden ratio and Leonardo shown it in his work. For instance, he stated that for a perfect body proportions width of the shoulders is a quarter of the height of a man. He also believed that working of the human body is an analogy for working of an entire universe.
