Macbeth Essay Macbeth depicts the fall from grace of Macbeth, a former thane of Scotland who commits regicide and usurps the monarchy. However, circumstances quickly turn south for him after this treasonous act, as he finds his castle surrounded by the English army and deserted by most of his men. In the wake of all these events, Macbeth receives news that his wife has committed suicide. Upon hearing this tragedy, Macbeth recites a lengthy monologue, lamenting on the meaninglessness of life and the purposelessness of his wife’s existence. To summarize briefly, Macbeth implies that his wife would have died eventually, and that life is nothing but a candle that ultimately burns out.
