How Mark Twain Changed Writing Forever Mark Twain once said, “You can’t depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.” Imagination is important right? Well it was believed and even shown throughout Mark Twain’s writing. Friendship was also a big belief in Mark’s writing. Even in both “The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer'' and “The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn”, Mark’s most influential novels, friendship plays an immense role in both stories. Twain hated the thought of owning and selling slaves mostly stemming from his childhood. His father, John Clemens, owned slaves; Mark tells the story of his experience and what he witnesses. In the book “Mark Twain '' by Clinton Cox it states “His father often slapped a slave boy named Lewis because he was awkward” (Cox 11). While the action was minor it stuck with Twain and how he viewed slavery. The author also writes “...when he was only four little Sam tossed and turned in his bed while listening to the goings of the captured runaway slave tied up in a nearby shack” (Cox 11). Twain’s eyewitness at such a young age of slavery stuck with him throughout the years.
