Mary Shelley Many people don’t realize what famous authors go through during their life. Mary Shelly is one of the most famous authors, and she had a hard life with many tragedies. This helped her write her stories, and that is why her books are so popular today.
Shelley was born on August 30th, 1797, in London, England (Mellor). Her mom died shortly after birth, creating a difficult life for her and her father. Shelley never went to school because her stepmother didn’t see a point in sending her, even though she was fascinated by the books in her dad’s library. She loved the ideas of life and death, and man vs nature, with her style being elevated and formal. Shelley is most famous for writing Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus, published in 1818 (Rabkin). The novel is about a man named Victor Frankenstein, who creates artificial life using the corpses of other creatures. Initially, the monster seeks love and affection, but soon, it hates every person that comes into contact with it (Shelley). In 1807, she wrote and published her first poem through her dad’s company called Mouseer Nontong Paw ( Biography.com Editors). Shelley wrote eight books and was named to the ‘Science Fiction Hall of Fame’ in 2004. She was believed to have created science fiction when she wrote the book, Frankenstein (Rabkin). Shelley died from a brain tumor on February 1st, 1851, making her fifty-three years old. She died in Chester Square, London, England (Mellor). Her family had gone through her desk and found locks of her dead children’s hair, and a parcel of Percy’s cremated heart, wrapped in one of his poems (Rabkin). Mary Shelley’s legacy still lives on today, with Frankenstein being one of her most famous works. The tragedies that happened in her life heavily influenced the theme of most of her novels and helped her write them.
