Imagine being 12 years old and your dad dies, so now all of the pressure is on you to lead your people to freedom. That is what it was like for Rolihlahla “Nelson” Mandela (Russell Goldman). Through the good times and bad, Nelson Mandela stayed brave and determined to fight for his people. This made him a great leader and role model.
On July 15, 1918 Nelson Mandela was born in Mvezo,Transkei,South Africa. When he was 12 years old his dad, Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Galdla Mandela, died (Russell Goldman). After these incidents, he was on the run for 12 months before he got caught. For this, Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life in prison, but after 27 years in jail he was bailed out by the new president. Within hours after being bailed out, he continued to fight for the freedom of his country (“Nelson Mandela biography). Additionally, Nelson devoted his life to the freedom of his people and eliminating white superiority. For example, he hid undercover many times to escape being detected by police officers, but he still held secret meetings while hiding so that he could spread his word.The longer it took the police to find him, the stronger his popularity grew around the world. This helped him spread the idea of equality in and outside of his country. Furthermore, he used his trials to get his word out to many more people around the world (Biography of Nelson Mandela). For instance, one of his famous quotes while on trial was “ No one is born hating another
