Faith is something that is not easily gained, but easily lost. In the novel “Night” by Elie Wiesel, the main character, who is also the author, demonstrates this very well. From seeing Elie’s actions such as how he thinks, how he acts, and what he tells “Rabi”, it is easy to tell that he is losing or has already lost his faith. In “Night” Elie has moments where his faith is strong but still could be stronger. In the first chapter, Elie wishes to learn more about the Cabbala, but his father will not let him. When he asked his father about getting a master to help him learn, his father said, “You’re too young for that.” Wiesel (1) In this story it shows many ways that faith can be lost, and at this point, his father is making him lose it. As the novel continues, Elie very quickly loses her faith. As soon as Elie enters the concentration camp, he begins to see the horrors of it and his faith begins to fade. In the fifth chapter, all of the Jews celebrate Rosh Hashana but Elie does not and thinks to himself, “What are you, my God,” Wiesel (63). This is interesting because this shows that Elie has some faith, but he does not believe that God is good or cares about them anymore. He also asks God “Why do you trouble their sick minds, their crippled bodies?” Wiesel (63). Whether or not this is true, Elie has a reason to feel this way at this moment because of the horrific things he has seen.
