Pericles Pericles, name meaning "surrounded by glory" , was a statesman, orator, politician, and general of Athens during the Golden Age who lived between 495 and 429 BCE. He made Athens the political and cultural focus of Greece with the development of the Athenian democracy and empire in the late 5th Century BCE and is well known for the rebuild of the Acropolis which begun in 447BCE. Pericles successfully led a military campaign in Corinth and sponsored the formation of the Athenian province in Thrace and Black Sea coast in 454BCE before being elected one of Athens’ leading generals in 443BCE which he held for the remainder of his life. Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi is a graphic memoir that reveals the life of a woman growing up in pre-revolution and post-revolution Iran, as well as her experiences in Western countries. In this book, Marjane recalls and highlights historical events that affect her life during her upbringing in Iran. These include the oppression of the Shah, along with the rise and effects of the regime. These events are integrated into Persepolis in order to showcase their effects on Marjane and the other citizens of her country. These events’ inclusion are important due to the context and understanding that they grant readers unfamiliar with the text.
Persephone the goddess of the underworld, in my eyes is one of the most memorable love interest in a piece of fiction. Persephone is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, and was kidnapped by Hades (Zeus and Demeter’s brother) Zeus was in on the kidnapping and even helped Hades decide when to do it. Demeter (the goddess of grain, agriculture and fertility) was so upset about losing her daughter that she threatened to make the earth barren forever and in the long run destroy all of humankind if her daughter was not returned to her. Demeter refused to accept Hades as a mate for Persephone and carried out her threat, and she did so for a year when finally Zeus stepped in not wanting her to kill off all of humankind so he sent Hermes to retrieve Persephone from Hades, when asked Hades handed over Persephone without a fess, but gave Persephone one pomegranate seed to eat.
People are like cameras and their personal experiences can be their lenses that change and modify the actual picture. This evident in Marjane Satrapi’s book Persepolis because the whole book is about a girl growing up, and forming her own opinions. Furthermore, Marjane has to mature in the turmoil of an Iranian-Iraqi war, she also has to survive the brutal Islamic regime governing her. This creates a very particular point of view considering that the parents raising Marjane are against the new form of government, and actively protest, risking their lives. As a result, this rubs off on her creating a very rebellious and dauntless little girl, who isn’t afraid of the new oppressors.
The graphic novel, Persepolis, is a much more complex book than a reader would assume. There is always a deeper meaning in the tales that the author tells for the duration of the story. Unrequited love is a minor part of Marji’s life, but the stories that she tells that are focused on love hold messages that everyone can learn from. Persepolis is an autobiography, which creates a personal aspect that a biography lacks. For example, miniscule changes occur throughout the novel that are subtle but revealing.
Both these novels show the constant struggles that people have had to go through to survive. In Persepolis the people of Iran began to protest the Shah by demonstrating. Eventually the Shah fought back by ordering the police to burn down the Rex Cinema, where there were 400 people. “The doors had been locked from the outside a few minutes before the fire and they forbade people to rescue those locked inside, and then they attacked them.” (page 14).
The categorization of Persepolis should be under autobiography. The book tells the story of the author growing up as a child during these historical events. The author informs the readers of what she grew up with and how her childish personality thought about during the time she dealt with. Persepolis tries to persuade the reader that Muslims aren’t that all bad. This book is a comic, yet it tells more of a story with its words rather than the pictures thus classifying it as autobiography.
She knew that it wasn’t all perfect and good but she also knew that it was not a cesspool of despair and darkness that some people make it out to be. So, she wrote the novel in a very smart way, she uses literary devices to show and tell a fantastic story but at the same time uses it as a way to talk about the problems and good things about Iran in the 1970s. This allows Persepolis to live longer and be discussed much longer if she simply didn’t use metaphors. It is also a way to show and teach people about a very heated subject and show them not everything is totally black and white in this world and that sometimes the monsters are actually men but at the very same time people can be great, people can work together to further a cause, people can care and at the end of the day people in Iran are exactly that, people and Marjane Satrapi simply wanted to show that in her novel and she succeeded
The graphic novel Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi is an animated ‘identity crisis’ showing how she has trouble reconciling the Eastern and Western values that she has been influenced by. By ‘identity crisis’ I mean Marjane is uncertain about who she is and where she belongs to. The Eastern values would include hierarchy, restraint, collectivism and deference, whereas the Western values would include equality, freedom of expression, individualism and self-assertion.
