Charles W. Chestnutt’s the Passing of Grandison is a tale that sheds light on southern slavery in a time where a movement to free slaves was a rebellious act. The author uses specific locations and dialogue to portray the reality of the era. The theme of the story is addressed through the acts of both of the main characters. On one end, Dick’s determination and courage is driven by a hidden motive that benefits himself; while Grandison’s courage and determination are led by his hidden motive to concur opportunity for himself and his family. Ironically, both men address the topic of what a man is willing to do for the person or people he loves, but the initial reasoning behind the both of the similar yet differing situations leads to a very unexpected outcome.

"The Renaissance", also known as the beginning of modern art, started in the early 1400s and continued into the early 1600s. It began in Florence, Italy and quickly spread even as far as the Netherlands. During this time paintings and sculptures became more life-like and beautiful because of the advances in science, especially in anatomy. This era of art gave birth to two of the most influential artists of that time, Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo. Leonardo Da Vinci who lived in Italy during the late 1400s is probably best known for his paintings the "Mona Lisa" and "The Last Supper".
Pre-Renaissance art movements were about the Gothic and Byzantine Arts. Architecture and the art that was made brought in new styles and techniques. Gothic art began in France, in the early 12th century at the Abbey Church of St. Denis built by Abbot Suger. Pointed arches, rose windows, flying buttresses and minarets were some of the special and popular styles that were used during the Gothic period. Gothic Art is the style of art produced in Northern Europe from the middle ages up until the beginning of the Renaissance and was based on mainly on religious devotion.

There was many Renaissance that took place and two very popular ones were the French Renaissance and the British Renaissance during 1500-1700. During the Renaissance which means "rebirth", people experienced advanced changes in art, learning, and many other things.

The Renaissance was perhaps the first time during which art was focused on the beauty of man.

The art varied from paintings to sculptures. some of the famous artists during this time were Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello. These artists have created amazing works and have more than likely inspired many artists around the world today. These artists have created a huge impact on the importance of art along with giving more of a historic background.
The Renaissance art in the sense that the works of this period are inspired most of the Middle Ages that by the Greco-Roman art. The Renaissance was a period that carries with it much of the discovery. The period of the modern area, where literature, philosophy, were discovered from the Italian Renaissance; the artists are inspired more by the Greco-Roman art that by the Middle Age.
