When you think about philosophy, who do you think of? Probably people like Aristotle and Plato, but what about Rene Descartes? Rene Descartes' philosophical work affected modern thought in so many different ways; he disproved Aristotle's theories, involved modern situations in his research, and believed anyone could achieve success. Without his research the world would philosophically look at the world in an entirely different way, yet nobody really knows who he is these days compared to people like Aristotle. Wouldn’t it be nice to give credit where it deserves to be given? There are several reasons why Rene Descartes should be given this credit, if we only knew of his contributions.

This is exactly what Rene Descartes did. "Modern humanity came to deify personal freedom" (Word Philosophers and their work, 475) This quote is basically talking about how in modern society our person freedoms are becoming very limited because of actions of humanity in this civilization. Descartes adapted to this problem along with many others within his research to make the information the most relatable and understandable to modern day society. "Conquer yourself rather than the world," (Goodreads.com) is a commonly known quote from one of Descartes many studies. Descartes believed that instead of trying to control what everyone thought, and instructing them to follow a certain way, you should just be yourself and let others follow if they choose. This relates to society today because people are constantly worried about following a popular trend. Teens especially are always concerned that they aren't caught up with the latest fashion, or style that's going around. If people would realize that we are all unique and just be who they want to be instead of what others want them to be, the world would be a better, happier place. (Early life, Salempress.com) This shows that Descartes was just a normal person, he didn’t have any special talents that a normal human being wouldn’t have. A typical everyday man did all of this work, which means everyone has the ability to do the same. His theory was that humans should have to strive to conquer their passions in order to obtain peace of mind." Descartes once said "I don’t hesitate to report my opinion that in one respect I am above the common run of the people. Ever since I was younger I've been lucky enough to take certain paths that are what led me to my thoughts and maxims which developed a method.
