Selena Quintanilla- Peréz was an American singer, songwriter, spokesperson, model, actress, and fashion designer. Selena is also recognized as the ‘Queen of Tejano Music’. She made her recording appearance in the ‘80s. She became an award winning artist in the Latin music scene with albums like Amor Prohibido and Selena live. She was later murdered, and her last album was released after her death. Selena was featured on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, MAC cosmetics feature, movies and books, and dolls.

But later down the road, Abraham gave up his music career to start a family. Selena was the youngest out of all three kids. She went to Lake Jackson Elementary School, in a small town. It was about fifty-five miles south of Houston, Texas. Around the age of six, her father saw her talent. He was teaching her brother how to play the guitar, when Selena began to sing. Her father was a former Mexican-American musician who composed a band ‘Selena y Los Dinos’. He was the manager of the group. The group practiced almost every day. Selena grew up speaking English, but her father taught her to sing in Spanish, so she would be noticed by the Latino people. She learned the lyrics with designating sounds at first, and finally learned to speak Spanish fluently. Selena, at the age of ten, used to be the lead singer and her two siblings played the drums and guitar. The group started out playing at clubs and weddings in their home-state, Texas. The group had many local fans, but the family restaurant, wasn’t succeeding. and closed. The family moved to the hometown of Corpus Christi, Texas to start a new chapter. Selena recorded Mis Primeras Grabaciones, in 1984, for Corpus Christi’s Freddie label. Freddie was one of the most established and oldest Spanish-language record companies in Texas. The only single and album, “Ya Se Va,” didn’t sell well. Later she switched to Cara and Manny record labels, but her albums didn’t sell well either. She was living in a van, the group continued to tour by opening for bigger Tejano acts in the southwest United States. The band learned to play many different types of music, for bigger and bigger crowds. The band played rhythms and blues based music in bigger cities. They also played more traditional Tejano music in small towns in Texas. In the year of 1988, Selena was well known, that she was voted the female artist of the year at the Tejano Music Awards. In 1989, she joined EMI Records. Selena had a major record company supporting her. Jose Behar was the head of the company’s new Latin Music division, and knew that she could appeal to a very wide variety of crowds, not just Tejano fans. In 1991, she made a song with Alvaro Torres, called “Buenos Amigos”, and it became a hit. The song went number one on Billboard’s Latin chart. It was a start to introduce her to people across the United States. Her next song, “Donde Quiero Que Estes,” she continued to grow in popularity and reach wider markets for her music.
