Selena was born April 16, 1971, in Lake Jackson. In 1981, she became the lead singer in her family’s band, “Selena Y Los Dinos”. Her band consisted of her brother, the bass guitarist; her sister, the drummer; herself, lead singer; and her father as manager of the group. As an early career, the band played at many weddings and clubs in Texas. A large part of her act was singing in spanish, thus she learned to sing and speak spanish fluently. In 1987 and 1993, Selena won three major awards that showed just how much of a hit she was at that time. In 1987 she won the awards for “Best Female Vocalist of the Year” and “Performer of the Year” at the Tejano Music Awards after becoming extremely popular. In 1993, Selena won her only Grammy award for “Best Mexican-American Album”. While on the stage in Corpus Christi, 1995, Yolanda Saldivar shot and killed Selena Quintanilla. After her death, her dream and memory still lives on. Selena influenced many things after her death and during her life. One extremely obvious thing that she influenced was music. Her songs changed the face of Tejano music, and they touched many people. Her performances influenced what people wore in the 1990’s. Her unique outfits attracted many people to base their daily clothing off of her performance clothes. Selena’s music meant a great deal to her fans, as well as herself. Her music was an irreplaceable part of her life. Her music meant more than anything to herself, it was a part of her. Making it big-time in music was her lifelong dream, and she didn’t want to quit it no matter what. Her music meant large deal to her fan’s too. Her death sent shockwaves through her fans, and people mourned her loss. Her music was a way for her fans to enjoy themselves and to become comforted. Selena’s music touched people deeply, and that is why it was a tragedy when she passed. Selena’s music was received well in many places along with the US and Mexico. In Mexico, Selena was the largest Tejano act in the country, and she gained countless sales in her albums. One such album named “Entre a mi Mundo” gained 385,000 sales in Mexico while earning 600,000 copies sold in the US. As Selena was being well-received in Mexico, things were also going well in the US. In 1994, her Amor Prohibidobecame the best selling Latin album in the United States. Selena was named the most “spirited woman who shaped shaped the United States” by Kay B. Hutchison, a US Senator. She was loved in all places she visited, and was a very likable artists of her time. Selena produced many songs during her time singing, even though she was only in her early twenties when she died.
