Selena Quintanilla-Perez was a Latino and Texas popstar. Selena was born in Lake Jackson, Texas, on April 16, 1971. She was murdered by the president of her fan club in 1995.
Music ran in Selena’s family, her father, Abraham Quintanilla, was in a band “Los Dinos” during the late 50’s and 60’s. His band performed a mixture of rock music and traditional Mexican songs at clubs and restaurants in Corpus Christi. Abraham gave up the band when he had children but he never gave up his passion for his music and taught his three kids to play instruments at early ages.

Even though Selena could sing perfectly in Spanish she struggled to hold conversations in the language. By December of 1994 Selena finally mastered the Spanish language.
In 1980 Abraham Quintanilla left his job and spent all his savings to open a restaurant, Papa Gayo’s. The restaurant gave Selena and her siblings a place to perform and gain exposure for their band Selena Y Los Dinos. A maid in a nearby room heard the arguing and then a gunshot. The maid looked out a window and saw Selena holding her chest and calling for help as she ran from Yolanda who was holding the .38, pointed it at Selena and shot her once more.
Selena made it to the lobby of the motel where she collapsed. The front desk clerk locked the door and called for an ambulance, but it was too late. Selena received a blood infusion and electric shocks to restart her heart that did not work. Selena Quintanilla-Perez died March 31, 1995 at 1:05 p.m.
In honor of Selena a movie was produced about her titled Selena. Jennifer Lopez was casted as Selena and this was her entrance into fame.
