Meredith McCullough Art History Professor Wellborn November 8, 2017 Starry Night: Vincent Van Gogh Starry Night, this is known as one of the most remarkable art pieces from the Post-Impressionism period. This notable piece was constructed in 1889, one year before his death, the piece has been identified as a view from his bedroom window of his asylum room located in France. The painting consists of a flame like cypress tree which is thought to represent a bridge to life and death, the curving lines of the hills and the genius contrast of bright yellow in the blue sky for stars. When Van Gogh painted Starry-Night the city that you see in the painting was originally in the left side but Van Gogh did not like the way it looked, so he changed it. Van Gogh wrote about the painting Starry Night to his brother who was supporting him financially. Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Dutch postimpressionist painter who influenced the history of western art. He was born on March 30, 1853, in the Netherlands and later died on July 29, 1890 in France. In his life time, he created 900 paintings and over one thousand drawings and sketches. However, he only sold one painting called The Red Vineyards, which he sold for 400 Frances or one thousand to one thousand fifty dollars today. Starry-Night is one of the most famous pieces he ever created. He was very poor and struggled with mental illness all his life. He remained unknown until his death at age 37. Painting was a form of therapy, an escape from all the madness in his head. Van Gogh even went as far as cutting off his left ear lobe with a razor blade. On the morning of his death, Van Gogh went to paint but he carried a loaded pistol with him, he shot himself in the chest, but the bullet did not kill him. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where his brother Theo came to visit him, they left the hospital a few days later and Van Gogh died
