In today’s society, many are preoccupied by the external factors and rewards in life. According to the Way, which is presented in the Tao Te Ching, this daily way of life will not bring one to become successful or contempt in life. The unhewn log is described as simplicity, which will bring one towards the way, and cannot be accomplished without the help of the reversal, return, and renewal.
The dao (or tao) in the Tao Te Ching is referred to as the Way. This concept is described as being blurred and unclear in 65 (21) of the Tao Te Ching, but within it there are objects and there is an essence. The Tao Te Ching does not specifically define the dao, but some of the most common insight given on the Way is the benefits and effects of following this nature. In order to understand the dao, logic will not fit this principle. Accomplishing something and going along with the dao until one feels successful and content with life describes this concept best. This manner will allow one to drive everything towards the Way. Return is then discussed and described in 60 (16) of the Tao Te Ching as returning to one’s roots, which is stillness. This is a form of deep thought and tranquility when one is following the nature of the universe while also learning more about themselves at the same time. This allows one to discover harmony and one’s self through the Way. Renewal is then described in the Tao Te Ching as the time when one returns to their roots. This is also a form of meditation.
