The serial killer and rapist, who terrorized the California in the 1970s and 1980s, may have finally been brought to justice just weeks after the posthumous publication of a book by Michelle McNamara, the late wife of actor and comedian Patton Oswalt. The arrest, just announced by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, may finally bring an end to a gruesome and previously-unsolved chapter of American crime history that had frustrated detectives for decades.

According to investigators, the masked serial killer would break into homes at night and tie up the victims – raping the female one if present – and subsequently pillage the homes of money, jewelry, identification cards and other valuables. Some victims even told authorities that the Golden State Killer would call them up in the aftermath of the crime.
The serial killer’s crime spree took a deadly turn in early 1978 when he is thought to have shifted his attention from burglarizing homes to murder. The first victims of the Golden State Killer are believed to be Brian and Katie Maggiore of Rancho Cordova, who were murdered while out walking their dog on February 2, 1978.

The case remained frustratingly unsolved for decades as investigators eliminated several suspects via alibi, DNA testing and other methods. The FBI and local law enforcement officials held a news conference on June 15, 2016 to announce a new nationwide effort to finally bring the Golden State Killer to justice, complete with a $50,000 (£35,884) reward.
After decades of futility, the case finally reached a breakthrough on April 25, 2018 when Sacramento police announced that they had arrested the suspected Golden State Killer and charged him with two counts of first-degree murder.
Who is the alleged Golden State Killer?
The suspect in the Golden State Killer case is Joseph James DeAngelo Jr., a 72-year old man who has lived in the city of Citrus Heights, California since 1983.
DeAngelo reportedly worked as a police officer in Auburn, California but was terminated in 1979 for shoplifting a hammer and dog repellant at a Sacramento drug store. He is also believed to have served in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Canberra.
