Jay Gatsby: A Truly Delulu Man
The novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is about Jay Gatsby, a wealthy man who lives in West Egg, and constantly throws elaborate parties told from the perspective of his neighbor, a man named Nick. Very few, if any, of the partygoers actually know Jay Gatsby, yet many of them call him The Great Gatsby. Great is defined as being considerably above the normal or average, and many extreme rumors circulate at Jay’s parties, but very few of them are true.. Jay is convinced he is in love with a woman from his past named Daisy, and schemes a plan to see her again at Nick’s house for a tea party. One night, when Jay and Daisy are seeing each other regularly, Nick, Daisy, Jay, and Daisy’s husband Tom are all together in New York City when Jay and Tom get into a fight over who Daisy loves. He lies to Nick about his parents, how he came about his wealth, and is not completely truthful about his education. “‘I’ll tell you God’s truth… I am the son of some wealthy people in the middle-west--all dead now. I was brought up in America but educated at Oxford’” (O’Brien 69). Nick meets Jay’s father at his funeral and is surprised because he was told all of Jay’s relatives were dead. Also, when fighting with Tom, Jay reveals that he studied at Oxford for only five months, which is not what he implied when saying he was educated at Oxford. Furthermore, rumors run rampant at his parties: “‘He was a German spy during the war’… ‘I’ll bet he killed a man.’” (O’Brien 48). Jay must be aware of what people say and believe about him, but he never does anything to dispel the rumors. Between blatant lies about his past, omitting details about his education, and allowing rumors to spread like wildfire, Jay Gatsby is a dishonest
