Love means different things to different people. I believe it’s about sharing a deep connection with someone and sticking them through tough times. In “The Great Gatsby” a novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby, Tom and Daisy Buchanan are caught in a love triangle, each showing their love differently. Gatsby sees love as pursuing memories and past feelings with Daisy. Daisy Buchanan links love with security, status, and wealth. Tom Buchanan shows his love through being possessive and controlling towards his wife, Daisy Buchanan, and his mistress, Myrtle Wilson. Furthermore, in the book, Tom is described as the “old” rich, and she prefers him over Gatsby, as he is considered the “new” rich. Her need for wealth, status, and security greatly impacts Gatsby because he changes his life drastically just for her, which doesn’t end well for him. This quote supports my answer because it shows that Daisy marries for wealth and security rather than for that deeper meaning of love. This overall shows the great difference between Daisy’s and Gatsby’s views on love. Ultimately, Tom Buchanan’s way of displaying his love for others tends to become controlling and possessive of his partner or partners...During the confrontation at the Plaza Hotel, a conversation between Tom, Daisy, and Gatsby is revealed, “‘ Daisy’s leaving you’... ‘ Nonsense.’... ‘ I am though’...‘She’s not leaving me!’” (Fitzgerald 133). In the same Plaza Hotel scene, Gatsby tells Tom that she is going to leave him and he refuses to believe it. Tom’s reaction to the situation just shows how controlling he can be.
