When someone’s spouse is still in love with an old partner, the results of what could happen may vary depending on what the partner does, & who comes back into the spouse's life. This could cause issues for both sides. In the novel ‘The Great Gatsby’ by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the 3 main characters: Daisy, Tom, and Gatsby, are in a love triangle due to an old relationship Daisy and Gatsby once had many years ago. When Gatsby and Daisy reunite, the spark restarts, and Tom realizes that Daisy still loves Gatsby. The main emotions shown are dissatisfaction, and hypocrisy. When he was “legal” enough: “He changed his name at the age of seventeen and at the specific moment that witnessed the beginning of his career” (The Great Gatsby). This shows dissatisfaction within himself, as he was unhappy with the old person he used to be. Gatsby thought the money had changed him as a person, and that he would be considered “the one for Daisy” now that he was wealthy. Daisy is a firecracker herself. The night before her wedding, Daisy was lying on the bed, with alcohol in one hand, and a handwritten letter from Gatsby in the other. He had written her the letter when he was off in war, and Daisy had somehow refound it. Obviously dissatisfied, hurt, and confused, when her friends tried to help her out, she refused to let go of the letter. Her friends had dragged her into the bathroom, and the whole time, “She wouldn’t let go of the letter. She took it into the tub with her and squeezed it up into a wet ball, and only let me leave it in the soap dish when she saw that it was coming to pieces like snow.” (The Great Gatsby).
