The Legend of Sleepy Hollow The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, is a wonderful ghost story written by Washington Irving. According to Irving and to his story, the story was inspired by many writers and folklore tellers, mostly from a small town known as Tarry Town. Tarry Town is a small glen, made up of people, mostly “descendants from the original Dutch settlers” (Irving 42), who called the glen Sleepy Hollow. Discovered by “Master Hendrick Hudson” (Irving 42), the town, and its many generations of descendants, had a history of telling old, legendary ghost stories and that is where Irving’s story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow begins.
