In the two narratives of “Ligeia” and the “The Masque of the Red Death”, there is a dramatization of the desire of human beings to try and conquer death through the power of will. In “Ligeia”, death is conquered by means of the determination of the will.
Could Edgar Allan Poe, the author of “ The Masque of the Red Death” could have been talking about modern day Ebola? In Edgar 's story the outbreak had some similarities with modern day Ebola, but it was just a coincidence. There 's absolutely no way Edgar Allan Poe could 've known about Ebola before it actually happened. Although Edgar was the only author to use the sickness before it happened, it wouldn 't be that hard to come up with it. Having blood coming leaking out of you isn 't common, but it does make a good story and Edgar Allan Poe saw potential in his idea.
Could Poe possibly be talking about Ebola in the Masque of the Red Death. Well he did have some similarities in his story to Ebola. We know that the Red Death was excruciating like Ebola ; was it truly the same disease? Ebola " the epidemic that broke out in 2014" made people bleed from their pores, and made your organs fail. Also monarchs and higher class citizens didn't want to be near victims.
This story of death works out, because Edgar Allen Poe gives good use to author’s craft. Edgar Allen Poe uses imagery, symbolism, and setting to create an effective story. In the “Masque of the Red Death” Poe uses description to give imagery.
The Masque of the Red Death Throughout history, mankind has been faced with one inevitability, and even though we have tried our best, death cannot be escaped. “The Masque of the Red Death” by Edgar Allan Poe is a short story that conveys the message; you cannot escape death. This story is about a prince named Prospero, who foolishly thinks he can escape the plague. This story gives the reader many messages. The main message this story gives is, not only is death inescapable but it doesn’t discriminate.
Poe was not talking about Ebola when he wrote this story over almost 200 years ago. He was not talking about it in the story The Masque of the Red Death. There are a couple of reasons why I think that. Like that the time period is wrong and both of the diseases are different,and he didn't even describe the disease in the story The Masque of the Red Death.

The story says that Ebola is virus and the red death is just identified as a disease, but they still kill people right, so they are kind of the same right, but did you know that Ebola is an real disease and the Black Death is a made up disease for a story called the “The Red Death.” Medical professionals say that Ebola is a disease; it is also a virus. Ebola is the most dangerous virus in the world since 1979. It's been killing about more than 2000 people in Africa while its spreading around for a long time now.
Poe wrote in the “Masque of the Red Death,” “The scarlet stains upon the body and especially upon the face of the victim, were the pest ban which shut him out from the aid and from the sympathy of his fellow-men,” (Poe 1). In the Bible, Jesus said to disciples “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.” However, nowadays, Christians starts to cloister themselves and wants to stay in their comfort zone, just like the “royalties” at the party in “The Masque of the Red Death”. The people in the story have a party inside an abbey and locked themselves in there while the disease that devours people runs like a hungry lion outside the abbey. In the end, the pestilence comes into the abbey also, and every single person inside dies one by one (Poe). But what will happen if Christians continues to lock themselves inside their world like the people in “The Masque of the Red Death” and ignore what is going on in the society?
The authors’ use of strong imagery invokes strong emotions that give the audience a personal connection to the characters and events. In the “The Masque of the Red Death”, the theme is mortality. Poe shows how people are vulnerable to death, even after taking every possible precaution. Poe writes, “The mask ... was made so nearly to resemble the countenance of a stiffened corpse ... gone so far as to assume the type of the Red Death. His vesture was dabbled in blood - and his broad brow, with all the features of the face, was besprinkled with the scarlet horror” (6).

Death can never be escaped no matter what. In “The Masque of the Red Death” Edgar Allan Poe shows the theme of death, a suspenseful mood, and an ominous tone. Through Poe’s use of literary devices, the reader can discover tone, theme, and mood. Throughout Poe’s life he experienced death with two of his mother’s and his young wife. Death is shown how inevitable it is with Poe’s writing and experiences combined together.
Despite the belief that one can live forever, death is certain. Edgar Allen Poe wrote his short story, “The Masque of the Red Death” with a greater meaning than simply the Red Death, or plague. He wrote this story, symbolizing the stages of life. In “The Masque of the Red Death”, Poe uses the symbols of the hallway, the rooms, and the braziers, to enhance the allegory, and to show how death is inevitable and one can not spend their life worrying about it.
