The Parthenon is an octastyle-peripteral, Doric temple. It lies in the Acropolis of Athens, towards the right side once beyond the front gate “the propylaea”. It was built around the year 438 BC and it’s the biggest and most famous building in greek architecture. It was built for the goddess, Athena, goddess of victory. A massive statue which represented the goddess once stood in the cella and was made of ivory and gold. It was built by the two architects, Ictinus and Callicrates, and the sculptor Phidias, and the dimensions of the temple measure approximately 31 metres in width and 70 metres in length. (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2018) The Parthenon follows the golden ratio, which is a ratio of approximately 1:1.6 to achieve the most aesthetically pleasing proportions. Although the temple is considered to be Doric, the interior has Ionic pterons as to maintain the ratio due to its height. The temple over the ages was converted into a church and then into a mosque during the Ottoman ruling.
