The Trouble With Sports
The trouble with sports is that they cause too many injuries. In the United States about 30 million children and teens participate in some form of organized sports, and more than 3.5 million injuries happen each year. Almost one-third of all injuries in childhood are sports-related injuries. The most common injuries are sprains and strains. Some sports are more dangerous than others. For example, contact sports such as football can be expected to result in a higher number of injuries than a non contact sport such as swimming. All types of sports have a potential for injury, whether from the trauma of contact with other players or from overuse or misuse of a body part. Sports can cause life-long injuries. Indiana University researchers looked at 232 men and women who were former Division I athletes and 225 men and women who didn't play high-level sports in college. The people were between 40 and 65 years old at the time of the study. Former Division I athletes were more than twice as likely to have physical problems that limited their daily activities and exercise. Many people play sports in some way or another, whether they are playing for fun in their backyard or in a competition on an organized team. Exercising by playing sports makes the body healthy, but sometimes these benefits to the health are also brought down by negativity, such as an injury. The severity of these injuries can range from minor to very serious, with some injuries requiring surgery to fully heal. These injuries may be caused from poor training practices, improper equipment, bad techniques, or may just be an accident. Injuries can also occur when a person is not properly conditioned to play the sport, such as not warming up or stretching muscles
