In the short story, “There Will Come Soft Rains,” Ray Bradbury uses the home of the future to give his reader a glimpse into a dystopian future where humans have been erased from the planet by nuclear war. The story was originally published in 1951 as part of a collection of stories entitled, The Martian Chronicles. Bradbury was a visionary writer who was known for his works in fantasy, mysteries, and science fiction. Imagine, waking up to the melodious prompting of your home who has already made your favorite breakfast, provided your favorite beverage, and is getting you up-to-date on the latest information to prepare you for your day. That is exactly what the home in Bradbury’s glimpse into the future did for its family. Modern smart conveniences found in homes (or on the horizon) come close, but do not show the same heart to serve as the home in “There Will Come Soft Rains.” The closest example to Bradbury’s intelligent home’s capabilities comes from the ability of modern technology to maintain a house’s floors. Just like the mice from the story, modern Roombas roll to and fro, sweeping small bits of debris into a tray for disposal. The only difference is that current homeowners must manually clear this tray periodically, while the mice in the story automatically take the collected debris to be incinerated. Both pieces of technology however, have their respective robots performing their duties without human intervention.
