In less than a minute you could make a cup of coffee, make your bed, or load the morning dishes into the dishwasher. It might take you 30 seconds to check the mailbox, sweep the kitchen or vacuum the living room rug. However, in less than 15 seconds, someone in the United States can suffer a traumatic brain injury (Napier & Claybourne, 2005). According to the Brain Trauma Foundation, an estimated 1.5 million head injuries are seen in emergency departments each year (n.d.).
