The Avro Arrow CF-105s fall was not only an economic disaster but a huge loss of Canada’s independence.

Research Question:
Why did the fall of the Avro Arrow CF-105 have such a big effect on Canada?

Introduction Paragraph:
The Avro Arrow CF-105 was the first step towards the future of aviation for Canada, triggering the creation of jets that we know today. On March 25, 1958, the infamous Avro Arrow made its very first test flight. The Avro was a hypersonic, twin-engine, all-weather interceptor that was on the cutting edge of aerospace technology at the time. It could reach a velocity nearly three times the speed of sound, traveling at an altitude of 60,000 feet. The design was inspired by A.V. Roe's success in developing the Avro CF-100 Canuck. It took only 28 months from the first drawings until the debut of the Avro Arrow on October 4, 1957. Avro had the whole world marveling at Canada’s new supersonic interceptor. It was not only a step for the world in a whole new direction, but a step towards Canada’s aerospace independence.

However, through a chain of events, the war caused the birth of the Avro Arrow. Canada was in a difficult position during the Cold War. Since it is geographically located just above the USA, it was highly likely that the USA was to be attacked by the USSR, Canada would bear the consequences, too. That was when Canada and the USA combined to create the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD. There was also changing politics surrounding the creation of NORAD, one of the specifics of this deal was the purchase by the U.S. Air Force of the new Avro Arrow fighter. These deals were starting to put pressure on Avro. Nevertheless, the two countries also made a requirement of military donation to NORAD to be included, almost like an exclusive
